Thomas Jefferson Shares Wisdom

Readers may have noticed a sneaking habit on my part to introduce quotes and thoughts from the Founding Fathers as we approach Constitution Day, which also happens to be MY BIRTHDAY! I have the honor of sharing that birthday with the late great constitutional scholar and former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Warren Burger, whom I had the pleasure to meet on more than one occasion.

So forgive me if I give you one more bit of wisdom from the Founding Fathers:

"I know no safe depository of the ultimate powers of society but the people themselves; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion by education."

Since September 11th 2001, we've had two elections in which the life and death issues confronting this nation were endlessly debated. In 2002 Republicans increased their majority in both the House and the Senate. The same occurred in 2004 along with the re-election of President Bush that included an influx of new women, Hispanic, black and Jewish voters to the Republican side of the aisle.

Seems these issues are settled. Time to unite around a common purpose or continue undermining the democratic process? Your choice.
