I don't know any Republican who condones or excuses the actions of ex-Congressman Foley. As soon as evidence of those abhorrent Instant Messages came to light, he was forced to resign.
It's a shame our friends on the other side of the aisle don't have a similar regard for standards of conduct and accountability.
After all, Congressman William Jefferson, (DEMOCRAT-Louisiana) was videotaped by the FBI accepting a $100,000 bribe, $90,000 of which was later found in his freezer. He's still a member of Congress. No "rush to judgment" there.
Just about everyone and their brother knows all about Foley and his online page problem. Not many know about Jefferson. No surprise really. Google counts 74,800 stories about Jefferson yet, 1,150,000 stories about Foley. Perhaps that partially explains the fact that Democrats are rarely held to the same standards as Republicans. You have a lamestream media which ignores Democrat wrongdoing while trumpeting GOP misdeeds.
And while we are demanding the utomost accountability for House GOP leadership, is it not fair to ask the same for Democrat leadership who knew that Rep. Patrick Kennedy (DEMOCRAT-RI) had a problem and yet did nothing to stop it? Kennedy could have KILLED a child while driving under the influence. Where's accountability for that?
For more contrast, let's go further back in time. In 1995, Senator Bob Packwood (R-OR) was forced to resign after allegations of sexual harassment of women emerged. Packwood was pro-choice, strong on environmental issues and pro-gun control. Yet he was hounded from office by the National Organization for Women (NOW
Less than three years later, NOW refused to side with Paula Jones in her sexual harassment suit against President Clinton. NOW and most Democrats defended Clinton in all his sexual scandals with the now familiar "No rush to judgment" and "it's his private life." Honest accountability was the last thing on their minds.
Considering the Packwood example, perhaps we should ask Dick Morris to rephrase his famous quote to something like this:
"If you're going to be a sexual predator, be a Democrat."
Or:
"If you're going to be a criminal, be a Democrat."
I'll just include those in the bumper sticker contest.
UPDATE: I have yet to hear one Dem commenter on this thread condemn Democrat misdeeds with the same vehemence they are DEMANDING of Republicans. A vote for Democrats this fall means LESS accountability for elected officials, not more.
