Ever since it became clear that President Bush intended to bring our troop levels in Iraq back up to full strength we've witnessed the curious phenomenon of Democrats who previously demanded such a change suddenly turn in the course of only a few weeks and oppose it. First, we talked about Harry Greid, the Democrats leader in the Senate who was FOR sending troops when the subject was raised in December and AGAINST the idea in January.
In the immediate wake of President Bush's speech announcing the change in troop levels we also catalogued a running list of Democrats who had earlier suggested troop increases.
But we missed another key Democrat who also did an instant flip-flop (I hope readers will forgive me, but there are just so many Democrats doing this, it's hard to keep track).
Readers may recall when in early December, Nancy Pelosi announced the appointment of Silvestre Reyes to chair the House Intelligence Committee. She passed over the clearly more capable fellow Californian, and woman Jane Harman, who had more seniority on the committee. It shocked many to learn that the man appointed to chair such an important committee did not even know the difference between Shiite and Sunni Muslims, nor did he have a clue about the terrorist organization Hezbollah.
In our initial astonishment that someone clearly unqualified for such a vital position would be named chairman, we missed the remainder of the interview where Reyes suggested that additional troops in Iraq would be a good idea: "I'm willing to ramp them up by twenty or thirty thousand . . . for, I don't know, two months, four months, six months."
That was in December, This was January: ""We don't have the capability to escalate even to this minimal level."
Notice use of the word "escalate." Apparently, Congressman Reyes has received his instructions from Madame Speaker, Ms. "Escalate" Pelosi. And to confirm that, you need only read the remainder of Reye's comments which read like a Democrat National Committee press release.
So here we go. Another instant flip-flop from a Democrat in a powerful position who now prefers "whatever Bush is FOR, I'm AGAINST" talking points rather than the convictions of his own so recently expressed ideas.
And STILL no alternate plan to win!
Talk about a culture of corruption!
