Liberals: Lovers of Diversity, Champions of Tolerance and Intellectual Freedom

Since we're talking about the lovers of diversity and tolerance today, thought I would include this article from John Fund at the Wall Street Journal online. As someone who was politically active for the GOP in college (see "Bush WON Ohio" below) I can attest to the intolerance of liberal professors. At Ohio Wesleyan University, I was walking to class one day and as I passed the Political Science building, the most liberal member of the Poly Sci faculty, a gentleman who resembles Michael Moore in MOORE ways than one, spoke in a very loud voice, intending to be overheard: "You know all Republicans are buffoons" he said. If I had said something similar on a different occasion it would have meant a trip to the Dean's Office.

OpinionJournal - John Fund on the Trail: "Robert Brandon, a Duke University philosophy professor, is one liberal who has at least made an effort to explain why conservatives are seldom seen in academia. 'We try to hire the best, smartest people available. If, as John Stuart Mill said, stupid people are generally conservative, then there are lots of conservatives we will never hire. Mill's analysis may go some way towards explaining the power of the Republican Party in our society and the relative scarcity of Republicans in academia.'

But Mr. Klein says a better explanation of liberal dominance is the theory of "groupthink," which holds that insular groups tend to adopt a set of uniform beliefs and then act to exclude anyone who doesn't hold those views. "
