Hundreds Protest in Venezuela as Chavez Prepares Law "Enabling" Dictatorship

Hugo Chavez stuffed the ballot boxes in Venezuelan Congressional elections and his handpicked apparatchiks are preparing to pass an "enabling law" giving him dictatorial powers to rule by decree.

News story here.

Students of history may already be familiar with an "enabling law" that allowed another dictator absolute power.

We've warned about the dictatorship in Venezuela and it now appears too late to stop it. The Enabling Act gives Chavez absolute powers to create a "new economic and social model," "the transformation of the state," and the sole authority for "security and defense."

Chavez is well on his way to complete control of the economy, the news media, telecommunications and energy. And he has already proven that any who dare oppose him will be punished. He even went so far as to enact a law making it a crime to insult him.

Meanwhile, nearly every high priest of the American left has made the pilgrimage to Caracas in the past few years. Among them: Jesse Jackson, Ed Asner and Cindy Sheehan. Chavez's Venezuela is a model of democracy leftist-style.

And the lefties called Bush Hitler?

For more information, see "If Bush is Hitler, What is Hugo Chavez" from the March 2006 Mike's America.
