People who do not live in South Carolina might be under the impression we only have one Senator. After all, they turn on their news and night after night they see Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) on television grabbing one soundbite after another.
But the defeat of the hopelessly flawed Senate immigration bill gave people across the country the opportunity to see, perhaps for the first time, the strong leadership and political courage of Senator Jim DeMint.
Along with Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL)and others Senator DeMint has been steadfast in defeating the Senate bill which was conceived in secret, largely unread and put forward in a process that discouraged, if not prevented, the bill's contents from being amended, let alone read.
His speech on the Senate floor Wednesday (video here) may not be delivered with the eloquence of Daniel Webster, but there can be no doubt that Senator DeMint is directly and courageously representing the views of the people who elected him.
Many of us wonder if perhaps Senator Graham thinks he is representing Massachusetts. We have no such doubts about Senator DeMint. He's doing the job the way many of us would if one of us were in his place.Senators, like Representatives in the House have a duty to do what is right and exercise leadership even for unpopular ideas. But the overwhelming condemnation of this immigration bill by the voters of South Carolina demanded nothing less than our Senators working to defeat this bill and return to the basics of achieving border security and immigration enforcement FIRST!
Thank you Senator DeMint! You've earned my vote!
