CBS News: A West Philadelphia abortion doctor, his wife and eight other suspects are now under arrest following a grand jury investigation.Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams says that Gosnell made as much as $1.8 million a year performing abortions. Williams goes into detail describing the case against Gosnell. Again, WARNING: graphic and disturbing:
Dr. Kermit Gosnell, 69, faces eight counts of murder in the deaths of a woman following a botched abortion at his office, along with the deaths of seven other babies who, prosecutors allege, were born alive following illegal late-term abortions and then were killed by severing their spinal cords with a pair of scissors.failed to inspect abortion clinics.
Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams said, "There were bags, and bottles holding aborted fetuses were scattered throughout the building. There were jars lining shelves with severed feet that he kept for no medical purpose." And according to Williams, state regulators ignored numerous complaints about Gosnell's clinic, which hadn't been inspected since 1993.
Fetal remains were kept in the same refrigerator as the lunches of employees. Pets with liter boxes were in the same room used for procedures and at least one employee, a high school student with no certified training was administering dangerous anaesthetics.
The clinic had mostly poor minority patients. The few white women who used the facility were given slightly better treatment.
The failure to inspect the clinic is a scandal for the former Administration of Governor Ed Rendell(D) who finally ordered inspections of similar facilities late last year. Was the lack of any inspection regime the result of abortion politics?
