After General Eisenhower won the 1952 Presidential election, President Truman said, “He’ll sit here, and he’ll say, ‘Do this! Do that!’ And nothing will happen. Poor Ike—it won’t be a bit like the Army. He’ll find it very frustrating.”President Trump (I still like the sound of that) is discovering what Truman said was true. But Eisenhower never had to contend with Democrats who are taking unprecedented steps to block anything Trump does. And Ike never had to contend with Obama loyalists still in government leaking classified information and sabotaging Trump policy.
--Harry S. Truman
Still, Trump promised to drain the swamp and campaigned on an ambitious plan to do so. So far, the swamp is still full but there are reasons to cheer. Below are a few highlights:
Supreme Court Nominee: A
Not only the nomination of Gorsuch but the hardball tactics for confirmation are models for how to ram through what the PEOPLE elected Trump to do. It would be an "A+" but let's wait to see how Gorsuch rules on critical issues first.
Immigration: A
Since Trump was elected the flood of illegal aliens attempting to cross the border has reduced to a trickle. One estimate is a 73% drop in illegal crossings. All this is can be attributed to the President's strong stand on immigration and the visible change in leadership at the Department of Justice and Homeland Security which have made border security a priority.
The Department of Justice has also lifted the blackout on news about crimes by immigrants and is working to remove criminal aliens.
Build the Wall: D
I warned early Trump supporters that building a border wall was not so straight forward as they believed. Now they are learning why. Democrats have threatened to shut down the government if border wall funding is included in the latest budget compromise. Of course if the government does shut down those same Democrats will blame Trump.
Keystone Pipeline and Energy: A+
Energy projects long blocked by the Obama Administration have been cleared by the stroke of Trump's pen. The American energy sector is poised for great growth in the years ahead.
Repealing ObamaCare: C
Trump endorsed Speaker Ryan's establishment ObamaCare light proposal. Had that passed, Trump's grade would be "D." Voters didn't elect Trump to whitewash establishment proposals but to do the right thing. Trump threats to Freedom Caucus House conservatives whose goal is to do what we promised the voters was a low point.
Job Creation: A
Ever since Trump was elected companies have been coming forward to announce new hiring plans. Trump orders to eliminate job killing regulations will pay big dividends in the years to come.
Foreign Policy/National Security: B+
Dropping the Mother of All Bombs in Afghanistan signaled that Trump is serious about fighting ISIS. Bombing an empty Syrian airfield in the middle of the night signaled a change from Obama's Syrian appeasement but still left the monsters who gassed those children alive. Meetings with foreign leaders including China have been "A."
Trade: A
Signaling that past trade pacts will be reviewed means America is ready to put Americans first!
You might think with all those "A" grades I might have given Trump a better overall grade than "B." But we'll save a review for the next hundred days until after we see how he overcomes opposition to the wall, repealing Obamacare and what actual tax plan gets passed. Stay tuned!
P.S. Democrats give their elected leaders an "F" for being ineffective against Trump!
