The following is a letter I sent to the editor of the Register Guard in Eugene, Oregon after we received a series of comments from a "greenink" who apparently works at the newspaper:
Yesterday, I received a comment at my blog: Mike’s America from an individual calling him or herself “greenink” originating from the IP of your newspaper (207.189.149.2) in response to a post regarding the racial tensions at Apache Junction High School in Phoenix where a Mexican flag was raised by students and then removed and burned by another group of students. And some people say there is no media bias? Well, if the Register Guard ever gets tired of having a socialist/historical revisionist on it's staff, "greenink" can always get a job "teaching" "geography" at a public school in Colorado.
The comment began:
“Interesting to see people bashing students at a high school named for the illegally extirpated residents of an area that was acquired by the U.S. via an illegal invasion in the mid-19th century.”
It’s this same repeated use of the word “illegal” that opponents of the war in Iraq have falsely claimed as a partial basis for opposing the war and of course it has just as little basis in legal reality regarding Iraq as it does to the history of the Mexican War of 1846 or the resettlement of Indians in the American Southwest.
Your “greenink” goes on in a later comment to damn the “Monroe Doctrine” which nearly every historian (except those in the pocket of revisionist socialists) regards as a triumph in preventing the spread of European colonialism that was responsible for so much death and divisiveness in the 20th Century.
Shortly after stating “If you are primarily interested in shouting and throwing insults, well, I'll leave you to the echo chamber.” “greenink” characterizes the responses to his/her obviously flawed perspective : “your America-uberalles tripe might fly in the redneck backwater you call home”
While I am sure Eugene, Oregon is a wonderful place to live, I doubt it compares to the world class beach and golf resort, Hilton Head Island, SC where I live. No doubt the Mayor’s Art Show at the Eugene Celebration is a cultural highlight, but it pales in comparison to international events like our Heritage Golf tournament, or the recent summit Meeting of the G-8 industrialized nations held in nearby Saint Simmons Island.
Perhaps your readers would be interested to know if the extreme bias so evident in the comments by “greenink” represent the editorial view of your newspaper or are typical of those who report for it. I noted in a later comment that “greenink” denied working for the newspaper, but most reasonable people can see beyond that deception considering the name the commenter chose: “green” “INK” as well as the IP address of the comments.
