Progress Report in Iraq

Last week we had a lengthy progress report on Iraq and the War on Terror following up on President Bush's speech announcing the "New Way Forward" in Iraq.

We noted then that a core element of this plan is the necessity of the Iraqi government to take on all the bad guys, whether they be Sunni insurgents or Shiite militias. Important progress was made with the arrest of a key Mahdi Army leader and 400 Shiites suspected of death squad activity.

The Battle for Baghdad has already begun and as we prepare for the insertion of larger numbers of U.S. troops, Iraq's Prime Minister Maliki on Thursday made his strongest statement yet on the scope of the operation now dubbed ""Operation Imposing Law:"

"We are full of hope. We have no other choice but to use force and any place where we receive fire will not be safe even if it is a school, a mosque, a political party office or home," he said. "There will be no safe place in Iraq for terrorists."

On Wednesday, the Iraqi Defense Ministry said 30 militants were killed and 27 captured. Our television screens are filled with the death toll from the latest bombing. It's a shame we don't get the same perspective on the justice being meted out to the bombers.

Senate Resolution A Lifeline to Terrorists?

Doesn't it seem unwise, to say the least, that as we undertake this key operation necessary for success in Iraq that the U.S. Senate is debating a resolution critical of President Bush's strategy? President Bush warned in his State of the Union Address that Congress should "not vote for failure" in Iraq.

Take the Pledge

Wordsmith invites those concerned that the Congress will undermine our troops and the nation's commitment to victory to take the pledge and make every effort to let Congress know that failure in Iraq is not an option. Skye at Midnight Blue has a model letter which you may wish to adapt and fax or email to your representatives.
