"Mr. Transparency's" Secret Plan for Debt Crisis

Obama's plan is soooo secret, even he doesn't know what it is!

Wolf Blitzer of CNN interviewed White House Chief of Staff Bill Daley on Friday:
Highlight from Interview – The President has a plan

THIS IS A RUSH FDCH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED

BLITZER: You say the president has put forward a plan.

DALEY: Um-hmm.

BLITZER: But the Congressional Budget Office says there is no plan that they can score because it's just a framework, it's just a speech. They haven't seen a document...

DALEY: Well, Speaker Boehner knows - and Congressman Cantor knows the plan that they both worked on try to bring the debt down and get past this debt ceiling. He does not have a legislative fix right now to this, because there's a bill in the House and there's a bill in the Senate and they will deal with those two bills. He's endorsed Senator Reid's bill. He feels very strongly that the bill that the House may pass tonight does not help the economy.

And what all of this should be about is trying to not only lower the debt, but at the same, get this cloud of uncertainty off our economy.

And the thought we'd be right back in the - this same thing in four-and-a-half months, with an economy that's in a difficult shape with or without Washington's craziness that goes on, is just unfathomable.

BLITZER: So what you're saying is the president did present a plan to the speaker, John Boehner.

DALEY: Yes.

BLITZER: But - but he didn't...

DALEY: Right.

BLITZER: - make it public.

DALEY: No, because there's... both the speaker and - and the president had agreed and - that these sort of negotiations do not happen in public. There's not a plan out there in the public realm, whether it's the fiscal commission, whether it's the Gang of Six, whether it's Congressman Ryan's plan - Congressman Ryan's plan lost in the Senate overwhelmingly.

So there's no plan that's out there, by any of these people who are saying this, that has any sort of chance of passing both houses and getting signed by the president.

Republicans have REPEATEDLY asked the President to make his plan public, if one exists. The fact that Obama has not done so (and neither have his Senate Democrat allies) lends credence to the charge they are only looking to score political points off the work done by House Republicans. Daley mentioned the Ryan plan, a plan which Obama publicly demagogued and was used as a tool to accuse the GOP of wanting to wheel grandma off the cliff.

And let's not forget Obama's promises of transparency during the 2008 election:

We didn't see that level of transparency in the health care debate and we sure haven't seen it during the debt crisis negotiations.

Isn't it about time Obama came clean about his lack of a plan and his failure to lead on this and other critical issues? After all, fewer and fewer Americans are being fooled by his empty speeches!

Obama and Dems Can't Blame Tea Party for Abysmal GDP Growth!

The systemic weakness crippling the American economy started long before Tea Party candidates won in 2010!

Friday's release of Gross Domestic Product figures (GDP) shows the problem goes well beyond current blame game for debt crisis:

(Reuters 7/ 29/2011) - The economy stumbled badly in the first half of 2011 and came dangerously close to contracting in the January-March period, raising the risk of a recession if a standoff over the nation's debt does not end quickly.

Output increased at a 1.3 percent annual pace in the second quarter as consumer spending barely rose, the Commerce Department said on Friday. In the first three months of the year, the economy advanced just 0.4 percent, a sharp downward revision from the previously reported 1.9 percent gain.

"The economy essentially came to a grinding halt in the first half of this year," said Ryan Sweet, a senior economist at Moody's Analytics in West Chester Pennsylvania.

Yet Democrats seem hell bent on trying to blame Obama's poor economic performance on the Tea Party. Here's what Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) said on July 24th:

"Their unwillingness to compromise is pushing us to the brink of a default on the full faith and credit of the United States," he said.

The consequence of a default would be equal to some sort of economic Armageddon (as if things could get any worse) with the clear implication that Republicans in general and Tea Party folks in particular would be to blame.

Obama and the Democrats had nearly two full years of unstoppable power in both Houses of Congress and the White House. They spent $TRILLIONS which did next to nothing to help the economy and was more about rewarding big labor and liberal causes. Now, they flail around trying to blame their corruption and incompetence on someone else.

There's just one problem: poll after poll after poll shows the American people aren't buying it!

The Tea Party isn't the cause of the problem, they are the SOLUTION!

Latest Thoughts on Debt Crisis

Stalemate and crisis continues as Dems continue to block GOP plans!

I wouldn't blame readers if they were sick of hearing about the debt crisis. Thanks to Obama and Senate Democrats discussion of the issue has degenerated into a hyper-partisan soap opera which is hardly reassuring to those who would like to see a real solution to the debt problem.

But there are a few more points worth considering:

Dems declare Boehner Plan D.O.A. in Senate but have NO PLAN of their own!

How is it that Obama and the Democrats continue to point fingers of blame at House Republicans, who are only representing the constituents who voted overwhelmingly in 2010 for a platform to cut spending, and yet offer no viable plan of their own?

Even before House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) finalized his latest plan to address the debt issue, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) declared it was "dead on arrival." Obama threatened to veto the plan. Neither Reid nor Obama had actually seen the plan which has yet to be presented to the House for a vote.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Senate has failed to pass a budget, which is required by law, for more than 800 days. The Obama budget presented earlier in the year was defeated in the Senate by a vote of 97-0. Not even one Democrat would vote for it.

Senate Democrats also defeated the budget plan by Paul Ryan as well as refusing to even vote on the House "Cut, Cap and Balance" plan.

Now, Senator Reid talks about a plan of his own, yet no one has seen the details. Not even fellow Democrats. One detail which did leak out was the phony savings claimed by the end of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. It's exactly this kind of smoke and mirrors which House GOP members were elected to end in Washington.

A $trillion in new spending for $100 billion in cuts in growth...maybe!

The plan by Speaker of the House John Boehner (this is the 4th GOP plan) is the best of a bad lot. Even here, the "cuts" are really only decreases in the amount of increase and total $100 billion per year for ten years. Even if these cuts were to take place (in past deals the cuts never took place) they would amount to only a small fraction of the federal budget which is expected to continue growing from the current $3.5 trillion. With spending at these levels and higher deficits and debt will continue to mount.

Yet even those minor reductions in growth proposed by Boehner are denounced as draconian and unfair by Democrats who simply want to continue the tax, spend and debt gravy train until it finally runs off the tracks. No doubt when that day of reckoning comes Democrats will be ready to blame that on Republicans too!

Boehner's Response to Obama's Prime Time Partisan Scaremongering

Contrast Boehner's adult approach with Obama's worn out partisan hackery!

So, Obama gave his big Monday night prime time speech from the White House on the debt crisis tonight. Don't worry if you missed it. You've heard it all before a dozen times. He offered no new plan or solution, just the same old worn out hyper-partisan attacks in a speech filled with fingerpointing at Republicans and class warfare. Now was not the time for yet another dig at corporate jet owners whose tax break of $300 million per year wouldn't make a dent in this year's expected $1.5 TRILLION deficit but that kind of phony rhetoric is apparently all Obama has to offer.

Obamas' speech showed he and his party remain the party of tax and spend. Tax and spend!

If you did not have a chance to see Speaker Boehner's response, it is well worth five minutes to view:

Remarks by House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH)
United States Capitol, Washington, DC
As Prepared for Delivery
July 25, 2011

“Good evening. I’m John Boehner. I serve as Speaker of the whole House -- of the members of both parties that you elect. These are difficult times in the life of our nation. Millions are looking for work, have been for some time, and the spending binge going on in Washington is a big part of the reason why.

“Before I served in Congress, I ran a small business in Ohio. I was amazed at how different Washington DC operated than every business in America. Where most American businesses make the hard choices to pay their bills and live within their means, in Washington more spending and more debt is business as usual.

“I’ve got news for Washington – those days are over.

“President Obama came to Congress in January and requested business as usual -- yet another routine increase in the national debt limit -- we in the House said 'not so fast.’ Here was the president, asking for the largest debt increase in American history, on the heels of the largest spending binge in American history.

“Here's what we got for that spending binge: a massive health care bill that most Americans never asked for. A 'stimulus' bill that was more effective in producing material for late-night comedians than it was in producing jobs. And a national debt that has gotten so out of hand it has sparked a crisis without precedent in my lifetime or yours.

“The United States cannot default on its debt obligations. The jobs and savings of too many Americans are at stake.

“What we told the president in January was this: the American people will not accept an increase in the debt limit without significant spending cuts and reforms.

“And over the last six months, we’ve done our best to convince the president to partner with us to do something dramatic to change the fiscal trajectory of our country. . .something that will boost confidence in our economy, renew a measure of faith in our government, and help small businesses get back on track.

“Last week, the House passed such a plan, and with bipartisan support. It’s called the ‘Cut, Cap, and Balance’ Act. It CUTS and CAPS government spending and paves the way for a Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution, which we believe is the best way to stop Washington from spending money it doesn’t have. Before we even passed the bill in the House, the President said he would veto it.

“I want you to know I made a sincere effort to work with the president to identify a path forward that would implement the principles of Cut, Cap, & Balance in a manner that could secure bipartisan support and be signed into law. I gave it my all.

“Unfortunately, the president would not take yes for an answer. Even when we thought we might be close on an agreement, the president’s demands changed.

“The president has often said we need a 'balanced' approach -- which in Washington means: we spend more. . .you pay more. Having run a small business, I know those tax increases will destroy jobs.

“The president is adamant that we cannot make fundamental changes to our entitlement programs. As the father of two daughters, I know these programs won’t be there for them and their kids unless significant action is taken now.

“The sad truth is that the president wanted a blank check six months ago, and he wants a blank check today. That is just not going to happen.

“Because there is no stalemate in Congress. The House has passed a bill to raise the debt limit with bipartisan support. And this week, while the Senate is struggling to pass a bill filled with phony accounting and Washington gimmicks, we will pass another bill – one that was developed with the support of the bipartisan leadership of the U.S. Senate.

“I expect that bill can and will pass the Senate, and be sent to the President for his signature. If the President signs it, the ‘crisis’ atmosphere he has created will simply disappear. The debt limit will be raised. Spending will be cut by more than one trillion dollars, and a serious, bipartisan committee of the Congress will begin the hard but necessary work of dealing with the tough challenges our nation faces.

“The individuals doing this work will not be outsiders, but elected representatives of the people, doing the job they were elected to do as outlined in the Constitution. Those decisions should be made based on how they will affect people who are struggling to get a job, not how they affect some politician’s chances of getting reelected.

“This debate isn't about President Obama and House Republicans … it isn't about Congress and the White House … it's about what’s standing between the American people and the future we seek for ourselves and our families.

“You know, I’ve always believed, the bigger the government, the smaller the people. And right now, we have a government so big and so expensive it’s sapping the drive of our people and keeping our economy from running at full capacity.

“The solution to this crisis is not complicated: if you’re spending more money than you’re taking in, you need to spend less of it.

“There is no symptom of big government more menacing than our debt. Break its grip, and we begin to liberate our economy and our future.

“We are up to the task, and I hope President Obama will join us in this work.

“God bless you and your families, and God bless America.”
While Speaker Boehner and House Republicans may eventually have to accept some unpleasant compromises in any debt deal, they are holding the line on taxes and spending while standing on principle.

Boehner Tells the Other Side of Debt Talk Stalemate Story

Obama refuses to give up job killing tax hikes and pet big spending projects!

Obama held a dramatic last minute press conference (transcript) at 6 PM on Friday. In it, he insisted that "I’m not interested in finger-pointing and I’m not interested in blame." You know that when Obama says things like that it his goal IS to try and pin the blame on someone else. He's NEVER at fault.

Obama went on to say that "We have put forward a plan that is more generous to Republican concerns." Really? What is it? Why has no one seen the details of this phantom plan. Obama makes multiple references to the various GOP plans, but when it comes to his own, no one has a clue what he is talking about.

It's clear that Obama wants to take the issue of debt and spending off the table and avoid having it become a centerpiece of the 2012 campaign. But if talks break down, Obama would like nothing better than to blame Republicans knowing full well that most Americans will never hear the Republicans side of the argument.

Millions have watched on television news programs as Obama points the finger of blame at Republicans. If there was a truly "fair and balanced" press in this country aside from Fox News those same Americans would have heard the GOP side of the story.

Here it is:

BOEHNER: "the House has passed a bill that raised the debt limit, cut spending, puts real reforms in place, and requires that Congress send to the states a Balanced Budget Amendment. It’s called ‘cut, cap, and balance.’" But "[t]he Democrats who run Washington have done nothing."

In explaining why talks with the White House broke down and what the steps forward are, Speaker Boehner said this:

BOEHNER: WHITE HOUSE INSISTED ON RAISING TAXES, MOVED GOALPOSTS

“The discussions we’ve had broke down for two reasons. First, they insisted on raising taxes. We had an agreement on a revenue number – a revenue number that we thought we could reach based on a flatter tax code with lower rates and a broader base that would produce more economic growth, more employees and more taxpayers, and a tax system that was more efficient in collecting the taxes that were due the federal government. Let me just say that the White House moved the goalposts. There was an agreement, until the President demanded $400 billion more, which was going to be nothing more than a tax increase on the American people. I can tell you Leader Cantor and I were very disappointed in this call for higher revenue. Second, they refused to get serious about cutting spending, and making the tough choices that are facing our country on entitlement reform. Listen, that’s the bottom line.”

BOEHNER: “NO ONE WANTS TO DEFAULT,” CONFIDENT HILL LEADERS CAN COME TOGETHER

“I want to be entirely clear: no one wants to default on the full faith and credit of the United States government. I am convinced that we will not. Starting tonight, I’ll be working with colleagues here in the Capitol – both the House and the Senate – to find a responsible path forward. And I have confidence that in the bipartisan leaders of the Congress that can come together and to ensure that we have an agreement that will allow the country to avoid default and meets the principles that we’ve outlined: the spending cuts that must be greater than the increase in the debt hike limit and no tax increases.”

BOEHNER: UNTIL RECENTLY, PRESIDENT SOUGHT A CLEAN DEBT LIMIT INCREASE; GOP PRINCIPLES HAVE BEEN CLEAR FROM THE OUTSET

“You know, until recently the president was demanding that the Congress increase the debt limit with no strings attached. As a matter of fact, the Treasury Secretary sent me a letter two days after we were sworn in in January demanding that we give him a clean increase in the debt limit. I immediately responded and told the Treasury Secretary that the American people would not tolerate a clean increase in the debt ceiling unless there were serious spending cuts attached and real reforms to the way we spend the American people's money. I went to New York City in May, gave a speech to the New York Economic Club, where I outlined the challenges we were facing and I made it clear that we would not increase the debt limit without cuts that exceeded that increase in the debt limit, that there would be no new taxes, and that there would be serious spending reforms put in place.”

BOEHNER: IF WHITE HOUSE WON’T GET SERIOUS, WE WILL

“I can tell you it’s not in the best interest of our country to raise taxes during this difficult economy, and it’s not in the best interests of the country to ignore the serious spending challenges we face. ... Now I want to say, this is a serious debate. It’s a debate about jobs, it’s about our economy, and frankly it’s also a big debate about the future of this country. ... Listen, it's time to get serious, and I’m confident that the bipartisan leaders here in the Congress can act. If the White House won't get serious, we will.”

Republicans continue to put forward solid plans and ideas to meet the current debt problem. For their efforts they have been attacked by Obama and the Democrats who REFUSE to put forward any serious plan of their own!

Obama and the Democrats are not negotiating in good faith on behalf of the American people. They are negotiating to score political points at our expense!

Reid and Democrats Slammed Debt at $8.5 Trillion but Now Demand an Increase to $16 Trillion+

If $8.5 Trillion debt in 2006 was wrong and "immoral" then why DOUBLE IT?

In 2006 Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid took to the Senate Floor to denounce a debt ceiling increase of $800 billion. That increase would bring the debt up to approximately $8.5 trillion total:

"Explain why they think that more debt is good for our economy...Increasing debt limit is the last thing we should be doing.... will weaken our country." Harry Reid, March 2006

That was then, this is now. Reid joined Obama and other Democrats in insisting that these earlier dire statements were a mistake as they throw gas on the fire of increasing debt.

Still, some Democrats insist that earlier GOP plans to increase the debt to $8.5 Trillion is justification for doubling it. Frankly, that argument does not add up!

Mike's America Back Online

Area lightning strike won't keep this blog down!

Last week late on Thursday, an intense thunderstorm moved through the Mike's America neighborhood sparking fires at nearby apartments and neighboring houses. The same storm knocked out the power supply to my computer. But this Friday, a replacement part arrived and after wrangling with the wires and putting the machine back together Mike's America is back online.

Even with a battery backup and surge protection, the strike was able to knock out the power supply. Let this be a reminder to others of the damage thunderstorms can do. The best prevention is to shut down and unplug computer hardware from the wall and also unplug the internet connection.

Computer meltdowns are just one of the risks and costs of computing. If you would like to make a contribution to upgrading the equipment that keeps Mike's America online, please click the safe and secure Pay Pal donation button in the sidebar.

Why Sen. Marco Rubio is a GOP Super Star

Watch as he slices and dices CBS's Bob Schieffer on Face the Nation!

RUBIO: [E]very president has to be judged by the times in which he lives. This President has now been in charge for two and a half years, okay? He has--he has increased federal spending by twenty-eight percent. Washington went along with his prescription for joblessness which was the stimulus package, and unemployment is higher than it was when he took over, significantly higher. In fact, we have not had unemployment this high for this long since the Great Depression with no signs of it getting better. Over twenty million Americans today as they watch this program are either unemployed or underemployed. And none of the things he said we need to do in order to turn that around have worked.

As far as waiting long to deal with this, here are the facts, I-- I came to the Washington in January. We already knew this debt limit issue was upon us, nothing happened during the State of the Union. He proposed a budget that was so ludicrous not even the Democrats and the Senate would vote for it, a-- a budget that increased the debt, not solved it. Months went by, weeks went by and up until very recently the President was completely disengaged from this debt limit debate. And I do think that in the context of politics, there was a strategy to leave this to the last possible moment so that there would be a take it or leave it scenario like what some are painting right now.
...

This is not a game. This is a very serious issue, people watching at home they don’t care who’s going to win this debt limit debate. They want to know how come they can’t find a job and the answer is because until America has a credible solution to its debt problem, people will be afraid to invest in America’s economy and create jobs here at home.
...
So where is the President’s plan? I’ve never seen a piece of paper with the President’s name on it that his plan to solve this problem. I’ve seen press conferences. I have seen lectures that he’s given to the Congress. I have seen these press avails where the camera comes in and takes a bunch of pictures. I haven’t seen a plan, where is the President’s plan?
...
The full faith in credit of the United States is in danger if all we do is raise the debt limit and it’s not accompanied by a credible plan to begin to deal with this debt issue. And it’s not me saying it. It’s Standard & Poor’s saying it. It’s the rating house are saying it. I think people every time they cite these reports on their-- in the media outlets, they need to read the full report. Because if you read the full report, they say yes, we’re concerned about the U.S. not voting to raise its debt limit. But we’re really concerned about the fact that the United States and its government does not have a credible plan to deal with the debt and the only credible plan to deal with the debt is not simply raising the debt limit, you must also have budgetary reforms put in place that show how you are going to save money and pro-growth strategies that show how
you’re going to grow your economy. If we don’t do that, we are in a lot of trouble.
...
I think everybody in Washington would like to see more revenues. The question is number one how do you get more revenues? And number two, what do you do with it? I think more revenue should come from economic growth. And I think it should come from that because I think it’s impossible for it to come from tax increases. None of the tax increases the President is proposing solves the problem. They don’t raise enough money. In fact, they make it worse. They kill jobs. And by the way, I don’t trust Washington, because they have shown time and again that any time they get their hands on more money, they don’t use it to pay or avoid debt, they use it to grow the government. So, that’s what I’m in favor of.

I’m in favor of-- of more revenue that comes from economic growth, the creation of new jobs. And if you talk to job creators, not politicians, not presidents, you talk to job creators, they will tell you that what they are looking for is a fair and simpler tax code, so I do support tax reform and I think there is a lot of support for tax reform in Washington. And they are looking for some regulatory reform as well because they think these regulations that are being imposed make America a more unfriendly place to do business.

Is it too soon to print the "Perry-Rubio 2012" bumper stickers?

Under Bush U.S. Viewed More Favorably in Arab World than Under Obama

Do Arabs want Bush Back too?

Hmmmm... wasn't Obama supposed to restore America's standing in the world and especially help restore U.S. standing in Muslim countries?

Obama, US viewed less favorably in Arab world, poll shows
By Farah Stockman
Boston Globe
July 13, 2011

The United States is viewed less favorably in much of the Arab world today than it was during the final year of the Bush administration, and President Obama is less popular in the region that Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, according to a poll released today (WED) by the Arab American Institute, a nonpartisan research and advocacy group.
...
In 2008, the final year of the Bush administration, only nine percent of Egyptians had a favorable attitude towards the United States. A year later, after Obama took office, that number jumped to 30 percent. But now it has plummeted to just five percent of Egyptians who view the United States favorably.

Similar figures in Morocco, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates show that the United States is viewed less favorably now than the final year of the Bush administration.

In a worrisome sign for US policymakers who would like to enlist the region’s support in isolating the Iranian regime, the poll shows that the policies of Iran are viewed more favorably than the policies of the United States.

In Egypt and Jordan, only three percent of people polled said they agreed with Obama’s policies in the region, compared to 31 percent and 20 percent who said they agreed with the Iranian president’s.

It's often been said that Arabs respect a strong leader. Clearly Obama is not that leader. His foreign policy is weak and has created a vacuum of leadership which is being filled by loonies like Ahmadinejad. The consequences of Obama's weakness are only now becoming apparent. Worse is still to come!

Speaker Boehner Sums Up GOP Position on Debt in a New York Minute

The key question remains: Where is Obama's plan?

In 44 seconds, House Speaker John Boehner boils down the GOP position on debt and spending:
1) Spending Cuts That Exceed Any Debt Limit Increase;
2) No Tax Hikes Because Tax Hikes Will Destroy Jobs; and
3) Reforms That Restrain Future Government Spending (like Spending Caps and a Balanced Budget Amendment).
Republicans have repeatedly said any proposal that fails to meet this test is bad for job growth and can’t pass the House.

Here’s Speaker Boehner again yesterday:

In a separate video, Speaker Boehner reveals that the House will consider a Balanced Budget Amendment to the U.S. Constitution next week.

Republicans in the House have done their job. When will Obama and the Democrats do theirs?

Blast from the Past: Obama Lectures House GOP to End Scaremongering on Entitlements

Which is ALL he and his fellow Democrats have been doing throughout the budget and debt debate!

Rush Limbaugh reminded listeners of this soundbite on Wednesday's show:

Obama Remarks to House GOP Conference in Baltimore, MD January 29, 2010

OBAMA: We're not going to be able to do anything about any of these entitlements if what we do is characterized, whatever proposals are put out there, as, well, you know, that's -- the other party is being irresponsible; the other party is trying to hurt our senior citizens; that the other party is doing X, Y, Z.

That's why I say if we're going to frame these debates in ways that allow us to solve them, then we can't start off by figuring out, A, who's to blame; B, how can we make the American people afraid of the other side. And unfortunately, that's how our politics works right now.
...
And so the question is, at what point can we have a serious conversation about Medicare and its long-term liability, or a serious question about -- a serious conversation about Social Security, or a serious conversation about budget and debt in which we're not simply trying to position ourselves politically. That's what I'm committed to doing. We won't agree all the time in getting it done, but I'm committed to doing it.
Since then, Republicans won big in the November 2010 election and came back to Congress with multiple plans to address the budget, debt and entitlements. The response from Obama and the Democrats has been to demagogue GOP plans using every scare tactic in the book, like pushing Grandma off the cliff, and even some new ones (like Obama's veiled threat to withhold Social Security checks).

And still, Obama and the Democrats have put forward NO PLAN and NO ALTERNATIVE except higher taxes and more spending.

Obama has squandered multiple opportunities to prove he was a centrist by stepping up to offer a real plan with real compromises that would allow House GOP members to support a unified effort to address the debt. His repeated failure to do so highlights the fact that he is committed liberal ideologue,  all about politics, not about leadership and serving the needs of the American people!

NY Post's Goodwin: Obama "Spectacular Failure" Speeches Like Film "Groundhog Day"

Do you find Obama to be an insufferable ass? You're not the only one!

I've written posts similar to this dozens of times by now, but NY Post Michael Goodwin sums up the frustration with Obama so perfectly, I thought I would share it. You'll want to read it all, but here are a few teasers:
US too dumb to know O is always right
By MICHAEL GOODWIN
New York Post
July 13, 2011

When President Obama started talking at his news conference Monday, I listened intently for 15 minutes or so. Then I got fidgety as his half-truths about the debt grew into full-blown whoppers. As he droned on, I did something I never did before during an Obama appearance: I turned off the TV.

Enough. He is the Man Who Won't Listen to Anybody, so why should anybody listen to him?
...
His presidency is a spectacular failure, his historic mandate squandered by adherence to leftist ideology and relentless partisanship. His policies are crushing the prospects for growth and dooming the hopes of 24 million Americans who are unemployed or working part-time.

Yet he is not going to change. He listens only to his own voice, which is why he has lost virtually his entire economic team.

The biggest media myth is that he is a centrist. Oh, please. It's a theory without evidence, for there is not a single example on domestic issues where he voluntarily staked out a spot in the American middle.

Sure, on occasion, Obama will be to the right of the far, far left, but that is not the center. That just means he's not Michael Moore.
...
He says it's time to "pull off the Band-Aid" and "eat our peas." Translation: It's time for Republicans to give him everything he wants. That's his definition of being an adult and acting in the national interest.

His only concession to public will is to pretend he's got religion about the fiscal problems and wants a "big deal." What he really wants is to get through the election.
...
He can never be wrong. You always are, unless you agree with him.
That's the story of his presidency. That's who he is.

Hey Obama: Why Did You Spend Seniors Social Security, Veterans and Disability Benefits?

Did you give $TRILLIONS in benefits to your big union/big business backers instead?

This is the lowest of new lows for a President who seems to have no bottom when it comes to scaremongering:

President Obama on Tuesday said he cannot guarantee that retirees will receive their Social Security checks August 3 if Democrats and Republicans in Washington do not reach an agreement on reducing the deficit in the coming weeks.

"I cannot guarantee that those checks go out on August 3rd if we haven't resolved this issue. Because there may simply not be the money in the coffers to do it," Mr. Obama said in an interview with CBS Evening News anchor Scott Pelley, according to excerpts released by CBS News.

Obama has now declared that he intends to hold Senior Citizens, Veterans and the disabled hostage to his demands for a massive tax increase that will kill job creation and cause Americans already suffering from the Obama recession to suffer more.

Contrast Obama's vile scaremongering with the statesmanlike approach taken by Speaker Boehner yesterday.

Boehner Boils Down Essentials of Debt Deal

And unlike Obama he doesn't tell anyone to "eat your peas" !

BOEHNER: “I appreciate what the president said today about the need for us to come together and get this done. Our disagreements are not personal. They never have been. The gulf between the two parties right now is about policy. It’s not about process, and it’s not about personalities.

“The president and I agree that the current levels of spending, including entitlement spending, are unsustainable. The president and I do not agree on his view that government needs more revenues through higher taxes on job creators. The president and I also disagree on the extent of the entitlement problem, and what is necessary in order to solve it.

“Most Americans would say that a ‘balanced’ approach is a simple one: the administration gets its debt limit increase, and the American people get their spending cuts and their reforms. And adding tax increases to the equation doesn’t ‘balance’ anything.

“The American people understand that tax hikes destroy jobs. And the last thing we should be doing right now, at a time of 9.2 percent unemployment, is enacting more government policies that will destroy jobs.

“What the American people want is for us to work together to remove government barriers that are getting in the way of job creation and real economic growth. Two of the biggest obstacles to job growth that we face are out-of-control entitlement spending, and the current tax code. And I think the fundamental questions are this:

“Can you control government spending without fundamentally reforming entitlements? I think the answer is no.

“Do you need to raise taxes in order to get control of spending? I think the answer is no.

“If you want to see an increase in government revenues, then let’s grow the economy and create jobs, broaden the tax base and lower rates. As Senator Rubio said last week, we don’t need more taxes; what we need are more taxpayers.

“So our disagreement with the president is not about closing loopholes. None of us are fond of loopholes. Our disagreement is over the idea of raising taxes on the very people that we’re asking to create jobs in our country.

“I agree with the president that the national debt limit must be raised, and I’m glad that he made the case for it today. But the American people will not accept – and the House cannot pass – a bill that raises taxes on job creators.

“The House can only pass a debt limit bill that includes spending cuts larger than the hike in the debt limit, as well as real restraints on future spending. My colleagues and I believe we should enact a Balanced Budget Amendment to keep the federal government from spending us into this same situation again. I think we also need real reductions in spending right now, and spending caps to ensure that any progress that we make is not undone in the future.

“Listen, I agree with the president we cannot allow our nation to default on our debt. But to prevent a default, a bill must pass the Congress. And a bill that doesn’t meet these tests can’t pass the House of Representatives.

“This is the message we will take, again, to the White House today, and hope that we can work our way through this.”
How's that for statesmanship and leadership? No class warfare rhetoric, no partisan fingerpointing, no scapegoating. Just a clear presentation of the facts and political reality.

Thank you Speaker Boehner. It's about time we heard the adult perspective!

Obama Floundering Over Taxes

If raising taxes was such a good idea why was Obama against it in 2009 and 2010?

A $TRILLION tax increase is the price Obama and the Democrats have demanded for any deal on the debt. It's a deal breaker for Republicans and the Dems know it. It's also bad economic policy as Obama himself explained in 2009:

From the Weekly Standard:

In August 2009, on a visit to Elkhart, Indiana to tout his stimulus plan, Obama sat down for an interview with NBC’s Chuck Todd, and was conveyed a simple request from Elkhart resident Scott Ferguson: “Explain how raising taxes on anyone during a deep recession is going to help with the economy.”

Obama agreed with Ferguson’s premise – raising taxes in a recession is a bad idea. “First of all, he’s right. Normally, you don’t raise taxes in a recession, which is why we haven’t and why we’ve instead cut taxes. So I guess what I’d say to Scott is – his economics are right. You don’t raise taxes in a recession. We haven’t raised taxes in a recession.”
...
When Obama warned about the consequences of raising taxes, the economy was moving away from recession—growth in the fourth quarter of 2009 was nearly 6 percent. Today, however, economic growth has slowed to less than 2 percent. Even before the horrible June jobs report, economists were warning about the “substantial” possibility of a double-dip recession. Many others agreed after the news last week. “In addition to the shock value…we need to seriously question whether a double-dip is there,” David Ader, chief treasury strategist at CRT Capital, told CNBC. “I would say it’s back on the table.”

If raising taxes in a recession would be “the last thing you want to do,” wouldn’t raising taxes in a struggling economy teetering on a double-dip be the second last thing you’d want to do?

Obama made a similar argument in December, when he signed the bipartisan tax relief agreement – a deal that maintained Bush tax rates (even for the wealthy) and included additional tax breaks for businesses. “Millions of entrepreneurs who have been waiting to invest in their businesses will receive new tax incentives to help them expand, buy new equipment or make upgrades – freeing up other money to hire new workers.”
Obama: I'll Raise Your Taxes After I am Re-elected!

In Monday's Press Conference Obama insisted that he wouldn't raise taxes immediately but would wait until 2013, after the election [video]. But doesn't this raise the question of how businesses can plan for the future on the basis of uncertain policy from Washington? And how can those concerned with the massive increase in debt and spending under Obama have any assurance that the situation will be seriously addressed if Obama insists we punt the hard stuff off to future years when another President or another Congress may not accept an earlier deal?

Once again, we are in the midst of another example of a failure by Obama to lead at a critical moment. He and the Dems are trying to dump all the responsibility for failure of these debt talks on Speaker Boeher, but Boehner is the only one of these key players who seems to understand the reality of the situation.
Photobucket
The bottom line is that Obama is trying to enshrine massive increases in wasteful federal spending that have failed to produce results for the American economy yet do reward Obama's political base.  Republicans would not only be fools to allow Obama to snooker them on this one considering the history of budget deals (see below) but it would also be an abdication of their constitutional duty and common sense.

Obama and the Democrats are "stuck on stupid" as General Honore is famous for saying. Doubling down on failure is not something any Republican should support. Republicans must stand firm in rejecting this fiscal insanity!

Speaker Boehner Dumps on Obama's Phony "Grand Bargain" on Debt

Perhaps Boehner has learned that Dems will NEVER make the cuts they promise, but WILL raise taxes!

It's official! The much vaunted Sunday talks on the debt crisis (I suppose Obama was too busy golfing to do it on Saturday) busted up early with no agreement. This after Speaker Boehner signalled for the umpteenth time that he would refuse to ANY tax increase as part of a deal. Obama practically forced Boehner to that position after reneging on earlier promises of entitlement reform and insisting on a $Trillion in new taxes. Ed Morrisey of Hot Air has the details.

Does Obama really think that Boehner is so stupid as to agree to such outrageous conditions as the ones Dem proposed? Do they think that Boehner has forgotten why the GOP won big in 2010? Obviously Boehner hasn't forgotten the message from the 2010 election by voters who insisted we must STOP this runaway tax and spend train hurtling the nation down the tracks towards certain financial ruin.

Boehner Remembers History of Dems Broken Promises?

Perhaps another factor influencing Boehner is his knowledge of Democrat's performance following other "grand bargains" on debt and spending in the past. Boehner first ran for Congress in 1990. In that year President George H.W. Bush was persuaded to drop his "read my lips: NO NEW TAXES" pledge in return for Democrat agreement for budget cuts. Dems got the taxes they wanted and the spending cuts never happened. And a few years before that, Dems found a way to get around the Graham Rudman Hollings Balanced Budget and Emergency Deficit Control Act of 1985.

The lesson here is that every serious past effort to control spending has failed and the tax and spend gravy train just keeps rolling down the track. Will Boehner be able to craft a compromise this time that avoids that sad history? It's unlikely. Even with a GOP controlled House, Senate and White House that job will be difficult. But at least Boehner appears to understand that another phony deal now will do more harm that good!

Senate Democrats Sabotaging House GOP Recovery Legislation

While Obama postures about being open to new ideas from both sides, his hatchet men in the U.S. Senate have been busy delaying, stalling, ignoring or defeating nearly every idea for economic recovery to come out of the Republican controlled House of Representatives.

Last week we talked about the claim by Senator Chuch Schumer (D-NY) and other Dems in the U.S. Senate that Republicans were sagotaging the economy for political gain. I said at the time, that Dems say this because it is what THEY are doing.

Then of course there is President Obama who regularly comes out and says he will listen to any and all good ideas knowing full well his hatchet men in the Senate will kill GOP ideas that don't pass the liberal litmus test for class warfare or gain the approval of the big labor unions which hold the real power in the White House.

From Speaker Boehner's Blog, a partial list of GOP job creating measures being blocked by Senate Dems:
House Committee Chairs Push GOP Jobs Bills Awaiting Senate Action
Posted by Michael Ricci
on July 08, 2011

House committee chairs are out with reactions to June’s disappointing jobs report, calling on the Democrats who run Washington to take action on Republicans’ Plan for America’s Job Creators. This morning, GOP leaders and authors of House-passed jobs bills – including Reps. Cory Gardner (R-CO) and Bob Gibbs (R-OH) – held a press conference to highlight the Senate’s inaction. Here are some snippets of what committee chairs had to say:
  • Natural Resources Chairman Doc Hastings (R-WA): “House Republicans have introduced and passed bill after bill that would add jobs to our economy, yet President Obama and the Democrat controlled Senate refuse to act. Three offshore energy bills that I introduced and passed in the House with bipartisan support would create 1.2 million jobs and add $840 million to the treasury to help pay down our staggering national debt.” Read his full statement here.
  • Ways & Means Chairman Dave Camp (R-MI): In order to get Americans back to work producing the economic growth this country needs, we need to let the private sector do what it does best, invest and create jobs. … By leveling the playing field for American farmers, manufacturers and service industry, the three long-pending trade agreements will increase American exports and lead to the creation of 250,000 more jobs. The President should immediately submit these agreements to Congress, where they enjoy broad bipartisan support.” Read his full statement here.

  • Budget Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI): “While the House has passed a serious, credible budget that tackles this debt crisis head-on, 800 days — and $7.3 trillion dollars — have come and gone since the Democrat-led Senate has adopted a budget. … Making matters worse, the only budget submitted by the president is a fundamentally unserious plan that doubles our debt and speeds us to economic decline.” Read his op-ed with Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) here.
  • Financial Services Chairman Spencer Bachus (R-AL):Small businesses, which create most of the jobs in America, are having difficulty getting loans because regional and small banks are being smothered by the 400 new Federal regulations mandated by the Dodd-Frank Act. These additional burdens being placed on financial institutions make it very difficult for them to extend the credit essential to create jobs and jumpstart our economy. Fewer loans to small businesses mean fewer jobs. It’s that simple.” Read his full statement here.

  • Oversight & Government Reform Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA):President Obama and the Democratic-led Senate should take action on House Republican's job creation agenda. Pursuing more job killing regulations like the energy production permitoriums in the Gulf of Mexico and Appalachia or the action against Boeing's new workers in South Carolina is a recipe for more stagnation.” Read his full statement here.
  • Small Business Chairman Sam Graves (R-MO): “…we must remain focused on removing barriers for small business job creation by restoring fiscal discipline and putting our economy on a sustainable path by cutting spending, lowering taxes and removing burdensome regulations.” Read his full statement here.

The June jobs report is proof that Obama's big spending, big government liberal economic policies are actually damaging the economy. There is only one party which understands, like Ronald Reagan did, that government is the problem, not the solution! Obama and the Democrats need to get out of the way of the American recovery and let the GOP do the job that Dems refuse to do!

Unemployment Rises to 9.2%

Who can Obama blame for this?

9.2%
Unemployment

In June, only 18,000 jobs were created. April and May jobs numbers were revised downward to show 44,000 fewer than previously reported.

All of this points to the continuing utter failure of Barack Hussein Obama's economic policy which has consisted largely of job killing debt, regulation and proposals for new taxes.

Sorry Barack, but you can't blame George W. Bush or the Republicans for this.

Republicans Keep Focus on JOBS!

While Obama engages in yet another round of class warfare rhetoric in a lame attempt to shift blame from his own failures, Republicans are concentrating on fixing the problem. See Marco Rubio's excellent speech on the floor of the U.S. Senate where he asks how many jobs will be created by an increase in taxes. Republicans in the House go even further with regular legislative intitiatives designed to get the government off the back of the producers who create jobs. From Speaker Boehner's web site:
Keeping the Pledge: Energy & Commerce Committee Report Highlights GOP Jobs Bills Posted by Katie Boyd on July 07, 2011
A new report by the House Energy & Commerce Committee highlights several steps the committee has taken toward fulfilling the Pledge to America. The report highlights action that would create more than 150,000 jobs through American Energy Initiative proposals to boost U.S. energy production, protect nearly four million jobs from being destroyed by excessive regulations, and save taxpayers $90 billion:
Creating More Than 150,000 Jobs by Removing Roadblocks to American Energy Production:

  • The House recently passed the Jobs and Energy Permitting Act (H.R. 2021), American Energy Initiative legislation that will end Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) permitting delays to boost offshore energy production, help lower gas prices and create more than 54,000 American jobs.
  • The Energy & Power Subcommittee passed the North-American Made Energy Security Act (H.R. 1938), legislation that will require the Obama Administration to make a determination by November on whether or not it will allow the Keystone XL pipeline expansion to move forward. According to an editorial in today’s Wall Street Journal, expanding the pipeline would create more than 118,000 jobs through construction and related economic development.
Protecting Nearly 4 Million Jobs Put in Jeopardy by Excessive Government Regulations:
  • The Commerce, Manufacturing & Trade Subcommittee advanced legislation (H.R. 1939) to improve the safety of consumer products while protecting thousands of jobs put at risk by the harmful, unintended consequences of the 2008 Consumer Product Safety Act.
  • The House passed H.J.Res.37, Communications & Technology Subcommittee legislation to stop the FCC from imposing so-called “net neutrality” regulations. Enforcement of net neutrality rules has been estimated to cost between 500,000 and 700,000 jobs by 2015, and result in up to 1.45 million fewer jobs in the economy by 2020.

Saving Taxpayers $90 Billion by Defunding & Replacing ObamaCare:
  • The House passed H.R. 1213, Health Subcommittee legislation to repeal an ObamaCare slush fund described as “an unlimited tap on the federal treasury to push for the establishment of state-based exchanges” without Congressional approval. H.R. 1213 would save taxpayers an estimated $14 billion.
  • The House also passed H.R. 1217, legislation that will decrease direct spending by $16 billion by eliminating an unaccountable ObamaCare slush fund that gives the Secretary of Health and Human Services the full authority to use the account to fund any programs or activities under the Public Health Service Act that she chooses, without Congressional oversight.
To learn more about the House Energy & Commerce’s efforts to reduce spending, rein in job-crushing regulations and help the economy create jobs, check out their newly released second quarter report here

And while Republicans in the House and Senate are focused on job creation, Democrats in the Senate continue to stall, defeat or ignore nearly every GOP proposal.

Who is to blame for the current jobs mess? The same people who would rather play politics and class warfare while refusing to act on proven GOP ideas for job creation!

Marco Rubio Asks: Will Tax Increases Create Jobs?

If not, why do Democrats talk of nothing else?

Here is why people love Senator Marco Rubio, the newly elected senator from Florida. He speaks with clarity and common sense that is sadly all too rare in Washington.

The video is long, but here's the relevant excerpts from a speech Rubio delivered on the Senate Floor on July 6, 2011:
RUBIO: We don't need new taxes. We need new taxpayers, people that are gainfully employed, making money and paying into the tax system. Then we need a government that has the discipline to take that additional revenue and use it to pay down the debt and never grow it again. That's what we should be focused on, and that's what we're not focused on.

You look at all these taxes being proposed, and here's what I say. I say we should analyze every single one of them through the lens of job creation, issue number one in America. I want to know which one of these taxes they're proposing will create jobs. I want to know how many jobs are going to be created by the plane tax. How many jobs are going to be created by the oil company tax I heard so much about. How many jobs are created by going after the millionaires and billionaires the president talks about? I want to know: How many jobs do they create?
...
Let me tell you something. I traveled the state of Florida for two years campaigning. I have never met a job creator who told me that they were waiting for the next tax increase before they started growing their business. I've never met a single job creator who's ever said to me I can't wait until government raises taxes again so I can go out and create a job.
I know it would be asking A LOT for Democrats to drop their cheap class warfare rhetoric and focus on what is really important for the American people: J-O-B-S! And thanks to Rubio, the Democrats decision to play politics instead of work for the good of all Americans is clearly laid out!

Obama Set to Launch Latest Scare Campaign Using Debt Crisis

Careful! If he doesn't get his way the sky will fall!

Obama is lining up his next big scare-a-thon using the debt crisis as his excuse to push for MORE "investments" (otherwise known as spending), higher taxes and more government interference in our lives.

One of his latest gambits is to say that the tax breaks for corporate jets are somehow cheating young people from a college education. He made that false choice repeatedly during his June 29th press conference and on other occasions since.

What Obama failed to mention is that the tax break on corporate jets amounts to $3 billion over TEN YEARS while federal help for college students amounts to $42 billion PER YEAR. With Obama's deficits averaging well over $1 TRILLION per year, the tax break on corporate jets (which keeps mechanics and service people employed) is nothing.

What's more, Obama was FOR the tax break before he was against it. He signed two pieces of legislation, including his much desired Stimulus bill which both included breaks for corporate jets.

What this shows is that instead of providing leadership and honest choices to help bring the political parties together to solve the debt crisis Obama is willing to go out there and say ANYTHING to try and shift blame away from the failure of his own economic policy.  This is the same man who promised that his Administration would user in a "new era of fiscal responsibility" yet has NO PLAN to do anything but tax and spend and increase debt.

American Crossroads put out this short web ad highlighting Obama's leadership failure:

Happy 4th of July!

HAPPY 4th of JULY!

For a conservative and a patriot the 4th of July ranks right up there with Christmas. It's a great day to be proud to be born in this country and give thanks for the freedoms we enjoy.

Since I was a boy I enjoyed the 4th of July immenseley. It was my Grandfather's birthday as well and gave added meaning to the day. We used to dress up our bikes with flags, play with sparklers and have picnics. Later on, I enjoyed the fireworks show from the lawn of the U.S. Capitol and a picnic at the White House.

However you celebrate this 4th of July, I hope you have time to reflect on how fortunate you are to live here.

God Bless America and Preserve our Freedom!!

Latest Dem Outrage: Accuse Republicans of Sabotaging the Economy

It's another example of Dems accusing the GOP of something THEY have done!

Who can forget when Obama first took office he dismissed Republican ideas for the Stimulus bill that was intended to "save or create 3 million jobs" by saying "I won."  Obama got his way with the Stimulus bill and other legislation amounting to trillions in deficit spending. Despite his promises that unemployment would never go above 8% it is still hovering at 9%.

It was clear to the voters who gave the GOP a record landslide in the 2010 midterm election that Obama's economic policy was an utter failure. Nothing has changed since then to alter that perception.

But Democrats seem to be "stuck on stupid" as General Honore told reporters in New Orelans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Not only do they continue to block GOP ideas for job growth, energy production and debt control, they continue to demand more spending and higher taxes as they ONLY answer they have to the nation's problems.

The latest example comes from Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) the mentor for the disgraced Rep. Anthony Weiner. Durbin wanted to include more wasteful stimulus spending for highway construction and clean-energy subsidies in the deal to reduce debt. The howls of laughter which greeted his proposal didn't stop him from declaring "You have to say to yourself: If they're trying to help create jobs in America, why are they killing the bills on the floor of the Senate that will create jobs?"

Durbin's line is especially hypocritical since Democrats in the U.S. Senate have defeated, blocked, stalled or ignored every effort by Republicans in the House of Representatives to cut regulatory red tape, and get government out of the way of job creators.

But Durbin's hypocrisy and bile pale in comparison to that of Senator Schumer who obviously taught his protege Weiner very well:
SCHUMER: We need to start asking yourselves an uncomfortable question: Are Republicans slowing down the recovery on purpose (pause) for political gain in 2012? And now it's becoming clear that insisting on a slash-and-burn approach may be part of this plan. It has a double benefit for Republicans: It's ideologically tidy, and it undermines economic recovery which they think only helps them in 2012. If the public comes to believe that Republicans are deliberately sabotaging the economy, it will backfire politically.
What Senator Schumer apparently refuses to recognize is that the public has already seen which party is damaging the economy which explains the landslide of 2010. Furthermore, when it comes to deliberate acts of economic sabotage, some have yet to forget that it was Senator Schumer whose public comments about the stability of Indy Mac Bank set off a string of bank failures which just happened to coincide with the 2008 presidential election. Federal Bank regulators specifically blamed Schumer for the run on Indy Mac.

Apparently, when Sen. Schumer talks about economic sabotage, he is speaking from experience. And the American people have learned from experience that Democrat's big spending, higher tax plans are themselves a form of economic sabotage.

But partisan attacks and blame shifting are all the Democrats have left. They have no plan with any new ideas. Nothing but failure heaped on failure!
